5 Major Engineering and Construction Projects Investing in a Green Economy

As the world grows in complexity, major development projects may represent the greatest opportunities for sustainable development of the world economy. The number of major engineering and construction projects that are investments in a green economy have risen dramatically over the last decade. These projects are helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create jobs, and promote sustainable development. 


Sustainability is a continuous effort and not a one-stop shop. Visionary projects for the future will require a sense of purpose beyond the completion of any individual project, and any good sustainability analyst knows to envision a long future ahead.


In some of these projects, the intent is to build a future economy where green infrastructure and technology is integrated into the structure of our society and government. Whether these be state government, federal government, or international corporate governance, green projects have the potential to impact audiences world-wide. 


Here are five examples of major projects that are investments in a greener future. 


The Grand Renewable Energy Park. This $1.8 billion project in North Dakota is the largest wind farm in the United States. It has the capacity to generate 1,050 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to power 350,000 homes.

According to the project description report available for public review, “Samsung C&T (Samsung), Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Pattern Energy (Pattern) are proposing to develop, construct, and operate the Grand Renewable Energy Park (the “Project”) in response to the Government of Ontario’s initiative to promote the development of renewable electricity in the Province. Together, these companies (referred to herein as “SPK”) will be involved in the development of the first phase of the energy cluster development… The basic components of the Project include 67 wind turbines, approximately 425,000 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels.”


The Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge. This $2.4 billion project in Nevada is the longest concrete arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere. It will help to alleviate traffic congestion on the Hoover Dam and reduce air pollution.

This geotechnical and engineering marvel is a spectacular sight to behold. The bridge spans nearly 1,900 feet in length and is an eye-watering 900 feet above the Colorado river. Bridges in this region are essential to minimizing distance traveled for vehicles, and this project aims to provide a travel corridor for millions of people and billions of dollars' worth of goods. Although public transit in large cities is important to reduce carbon emissions, minimizing long distances traveled, known as VMT, or Vehicle Miles Traveled, is a crucial point of analysis for all projects.


The Crossrail Project. This $22.8 billion project in London is the largest infrastructure project in Europe. It will create a new rail line that will connect the city's east and west ends. The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

The Crossrail project aims to boost the economy by making rail more accessible, easier, and faster for travelers. These rails are intended to carry 200 million passengers annually and will reduce carbon emissions associated with traveling for millions. These projects will create more access, better, and safer options for people and may boost the economy by £42 billion. 


Railroad Station

The Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project. This $25 billion project in New York City is the largest private real estate development in the United States. It is creating a new neighborhood with 18 million square feet of office space, 4,000 residential units, and 1 million square feet of retail space. The project is expected to create 23,000 jobs and generate $19 billion in tax revenue.

This mixed use project combines many lifestyles in one place. With residential and commercial spaces aimed to create walkable and accessible services and goods, the Hudson yards redevelopment has the tagline “Tomorrow’s City, Today”. Spearheaded and developed by various architectural groups and developers, the future of the Hudson Yards is sure to impress. 


The Morro Bay Battery Storage Project. This $1 billion project in Morro Bay is one of the largest battery storage projects in the world. It is designed to store energy from renewable sources, such as solar and wind, and release it when needed. The project is expected to create 500 jobs and generate $200 million in tax revenue.

Battery storage comes in multiple forms. In the simplest of terms, a battery is just a method to store energy. In some cases, molten salt can be used as a battery. In others, batteries are created using entropy and kinetic energy. In the case of the Morro Bay battery storage project, the 600MW Lithium-Ion batteries in storage racks inside of a large building could power up to 450,000 residential homes. The facility is supplied with power from a renewable source and is kept until residential demands rise. To meet the demand, the facility can operate any number of the batteries at one time, to supplement the existing power grid. 


These five projects are just a few examples of the many engineering and construction projects that are investments in a green economy. These projects are helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create jobs, create optimal housing for people, and promote sustainable development.


Visionary solutions to the world's problems are often met with great investments. Working to support a local economy is just as important as working on the bleeding edge of technology. Investments such as these can help create a better future for us all.
